Bryson DeChambeau to have surgery on broken hand

The injury bug has bitten Bryson DeChambeau hard this golf season, and now it appears he will miss one of his favorite events because he requires surgery.

The 2020 U.S. Open champion has reportedly withdrawn from a Longest Drive Association event in Florida this week because he is scheduled to have surgery to repair a broken bone in his left hand.

"He’s going to have surgery on Thursday," Longest Drive Association owner Bobby Peterson told Sports Illustrated on Wednesday. "It’s unfortunate more for him. I hate that he’s not going to the event. But I hate it more for him. Obviously, it’s not good or he wouldn’t be doing that. I know he was trying to avoid it, but I guess he felt it was something he had to do."

Although neither DeChambeau nor his agent has confirmed the surgery news, it doesn't come as much of a surprise. DeChambeau has missed significant time this PGA Tour season because of injuries to his hand and to his hip. He hinted surgery was on the table when he didn't advance at the Match Play earlier this year because of the injuries.

More recently, DeChambeau missed the cut at the Valero Texas Open and at last weekend's Masters in Augusta, when he admitted his doctors advised against him competing at all.

"They recommended that I don't come back for a while," he admitted, via ESPN.

While he reportedly sustained the injuries after a fall at a tournament on the Asian Tour, the California native continues to field questions as to whether his intense weight training regimen is also to blame.

DeChambeau's injury woes and poor play have dropped him to 19th overall in the world PGA Tour ranking. No timetable has been revealed regarding his return.
