Charges against Scottie Scheffler dropped

Authorities are dropping the criminal charges filed against Scottie Scheffler during the PGA Championship. Kentucky prosecutors made the announcement in court on Wednesday afternoon.

"Mr. Scheffler's characterization that this was a big misunderstanding is corroborated by the evidence," Jefferson County Attorney Mike O'Connell said in his request to drop the charges.

Terry Meiners of News Radio 840 WHAS in Louisville, Ky. first reported the news on X before court began.

This announcement came a few hours after another video of Scheffler's arrest surfaced online. The video, which was first posted to X by Alex Myers of Golf Digest, shows Scheffler explaining to a Louisville police officer that he thought the cop was a security guard.

"If I knew he was a police officer I would've been much more less afraid, but the panic kind of set in," Scheffler can be heard saying. "As you can see, I'm still shaking because I was afraid. I didn't know who he was," Scheffler told the officer. "He didn't say, 'Police. Get out of the car.' He just hit me with his flashlight and yelled, 'Get out of the car!'

"Believe me, if I knew he was a police officer I would've gotten out of the car. I don't know what to tell you other than I was a little bit panicked trying to get into the golf course."

Scheffler was facing four criminal charges: second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer. The World No. 1 was scheduled to appear in court on June 3 for his arraignment, but now he can put this bizarre incident behind him.
