Sure, it looked like video-game golf, but three former Cal players combined to shoot 73 under par at The Sentry, the PGA Tour’s season-opening tournament at Kapalua Report on Maui.
Byeong Hun An, 32, who played one season for the Bears in 2011, wound up alone in fourth place after a final round of 66 over the par-73 layout gave him a score of 26 under par.
Collin Morikawa, 26, was one stroke back and part of a five-way tie for fifth after carding a 65 on Sunday.
And Max Homa, 32 closed with a 66 to wind up in an eight-way share of 14th place at minus-22.
Scores were ridiculously low across the board for four days, with American Chris Kirk, 38, capturing top honors at 29 under after rounds of 67-65-66-65. Kirk, who took the lead with a birdie on No. 17, won $3.6 million.
Sahith Theegala wound up one stroke back after a Sunday round of 63 and took home $2.16 million. Jordan Spieth was third at minus-27 after a 65 over the final 18 holes, earning him $1.36 million.
An, a South Korean who was the youngest winner ever at the U.S. Amateur, as a 17-year-old in 2009, began Sunday tied for third and inched to a share of second before settling for the fourth position.
He has never won a PGA Tour event, but he came away with a paycheck of $875,000. An finished four rounds with 27 birdies, two eagles and five bogeys.
Morikawa, ranked No. 13 in the world, played the first, second and final rounds without a bogey, completing 72 holes with 24 birdies, an eagle and just one bogey. Morikawa pocketed a $690,500 share of the $20 million overall purse.
Homa, ranked No. 7 in the world, had seven birdies on Sunday, giving him a ledger of 27 birdies and five bogeys for the tournament. Homa earned $320,250.
The Sentry was the first of eight signature events on the calendar this year that will feature huge purses and small, elite fields. A total of 59 golfers participated this week.
