Golf best bets: Longshots to target for the BMW Championship

We're down to two events left in the 2023 FedEx Cup Playoffs. The top 50 players in the standings will head to Olympia Fields this week for the BMW Championship, and only 30 will survive and advance to the season-ending Tour Championship.

There aren't many massive prices to be found in the shortened field this week, but there are still a few enticing longshots we can add to the card. Here are the three longshots I'll be targeting with outright and top 20 bets for the BMW Championship.

Emiliano Grillo (+8000 FanDuel)

You can't succeed at Olympia Fields unless your ball striking is on point, and that's normally the case for sweet-swinging Emiliano Grillo.

Grillo has gained strokes on approach in eight of his last 12 starts, and he's gained strokes off the tee in six of his last seven. The putter is typically the club that sets him back, but Grillo has gained more than 10 strokes on the greens over his last three starts en route to three straight top-20 finishes. We'll ride the solid recent form here.

Harris English (+12000 FD)

Harris English loves himself a tough golf course. His best recent finish came with a T8 at the U.S. Open, and his best finish all season was a T2 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, one of the most challenging tournaments on the schedule every year.

For some reason, English turns into Ben Crenshaw on the greens when he plays hard golf courses. As for his ball striking, the American has gained nearly 14 strokes on approach over his last eight rounds. The recent finishes haven't backed up his stellar ball striking, but that should change this week with the winning score expected to land in the single digits.

Adam Svensson (+15000 FD)

If you're interested in riding a scorching hot ball striker at a big price this week, Adam Svensson is your man.

Svensson has gained more than 10 strokes on approach over his last three starts after losing strokes in eight straight, and he's also gained off the tee in each of his last four events. The putting has been hit or miss for Svensson all season, but he recently gained 5.3 strokes on the greens en route to a T7 at the Wyndham Championship. The Canadian is the only player priced above 140/1 I'd consider betting this week.
