LIV golfers told not to wear league logo at BMW PGA Championship
The 2022 PGA Tour season concluded last weekend, but the league's feud with LIV Golf is still going strong. In the latest episode of the sports standoff that knows no end, LIV Golf players have been asked not to wear logos promoting the breakaway league at the upcoming BMW PGA Championship in Surrey, England.
In a copy of a memo obtained by Golf Channel, DP World Tour CEO Keith Pelley informs the 18 LIV Golf players competing that they "will not be required to play in the Wednesday Pro-Am and out of respect for our partners, our broadcasters, and your fellow competitors, we would kindly ask you to consider not wearing LIV Golf-branded apparel during your participation at Wentworth."
While opposition to the Saudi Arabia-funded league is not new, Pelley's request comes at an interesting time. Just a little over a week ago, the Wall Street Journal reported that players contracted by LIV Golf are asked to wear the league's logo at both LIV and non-LIV events.
Logo-gate is just one of the many points of contention leading up to the BMW Championship across the pond. It marks the first time several PGA Tour pros and LIV golfers will be in the same competition since many of them defected to Greg Norman's league for substantial paydays with fewer events. Rory McIlroy, perhaps LIV's biggest detractor, said after winning the Tour Championship last weekend that it will be "hard for him to stomach" playing alongside golfers who left the PGA Tour the way they did.
The BMW PGA Championship will take place in England Sept. 8-11.
