In an effort to grow golf's popularity last year, the PGA and LPGA merged to create the first mixed-team event since 1999, which became known as the Grant Thornton Invitational. The tournament invited 16 players each from both tours to play as a team in a three-round format consisting of 18 holes of scramble, 18 holes of alternate shot, and 18 holes of four-ball play.

The event was quite a success for both tours in its inaugural season with the team of Lydia Ko and Jason Day claiming the $1,000,000 purse. Unbeknownst to the players at the time was that the Olympic committee also had their eyes on the tournament.

A Mixed-Team Event in LA for 2028?

Rumors circulated early on Tuesday that the Olympic committee was looking to add a mixed-team event to the schedule for 2028. Such an event wouldn't be in play this year as the schedule has already been determined. The soonest we could see this implemented would be at the Los Angeles games in 2028.

A mixed-team event makes plenty of sense for the Olympics. Featuring teams comprised of the best male and female players in the world, allowing them to represent their respective countries, and compete on one of the best courses in the world would be a major win for golf. The 2028 Olympic tournaments will be played at Riviera, the host of the Genesis Invitational.

Although the news just broke early on Tuesday, it seems this idea has been in motion for quite some time. Per reports, golf fans may see an official announcement regarding a team event as soon as the Masters.

On Tap At The Tee Box

Adding a mixed-team event would be great for golf, the Olympics, and the general sports fan. There's just something special about getting to cheer for your country in a team-based event. Give me Scottie Scheffler and Lexi Thompson for gold!

While it appears we'll have to wait at least four more years to get the finished product, it's an exciting development that will be a positive gain for the game in the Olympics moving forward.
