PGA 2022: Masters betting guide

With the way that the NCAA Tournament was broadcast this year, there was less advertising for the Masters, right? (Thank you.) Or at least that is the way that I viewed it. Nevertheless, the PGA's signature event is this week at Augusta National.

Majors always gather lots of eyeballs and action but the recent news that Tiger Woods is going "give it a shot" is only going to gather more attention and dollars. I am neither a Tiger fan nor Tiger hater — I just hope he does not embarrass himself in any way. Nobody wants to see that. I am all for interesting stories and this is definitely one to follow. 

The Masters' field is usually the best of the season and this time around is no different. However, if you like to do quick math to narrow the field down of possible winners you can probably eliminate the seven ceremonial ex-champs, six amateurs, and a bunch of first-timers. That is close to half of the field. Among the rest, it will be quite the battle.

Maybe if we get lucky we will see Tiger in red on Sunday. I won't put money on it, but lots of other people will.

Bets to Consider

Patrick Cantlay +2500

He might not have the wins, but Cantlay has been one of the best players on the Tour this season — four straight top tens to start. His Masters' results have been up and down but at that price, he is worth a shot. He is in the "might be due" category. 

Collin Morikawa +2000

The profile of Morikawa is not all that different than Cantlay except for the fact that he has won Majors before. The style of game that you need to succeed at the Masters is exactly what he has, but he has not put it together just yet at Augusta. 

Jon Rahm +900

Rahm's best run at the Masters was a fourth place finish back in 2018. His game has risen since then and with his falling behind Scottie Scheffler in the World Golf Rankings perhaps there is a little extra motivation for him this week. It is a tough field but he is actually flying under the radar with Tiger etc. He is still chalk but not as much as at other events. 

Dustin Johnson +1600

Johnson was supposed to be the "guy" with the slide of Tiger Woods. However, since winning the Green Jacket a couple of years ago we have seen his game slipping and his ranking along with it. There is something about winning it a couple of years after your first time though. Six different golfers have done it and there is no reason he can't join that group. At a good price too. 

Mackenzie Hughes +3500

All of the guys above are favorites of one type or another. Hughes is a little more in the weeds on the golf scene at 57 in the World Rankings. Hughes' strength is his putting but he has never finished above 15th in a Major (at last year's US Open). He is a true sleeper.
