Rory McIlroy finishes 2022 Masters with record-tying final round

Rory McIlroy would need a meltdown from Scottie Scheffler to win the 2022 Masters, but he did all he could do Sunday with one of the best rounds in the history of the tournament.

McIlroy, 32, hit six birdies and an eagle in the fourth round to finish the day with a score of 64. His eight-under-par day tied the record for the best round four in the history of the Masters and it launched McIlroy up the leaderboard. At the time his round ended, McIlroy was in second place, three strokes behind Scheffler for the lead and three strokes ahead of third place Cameron Smith.

The cherry on top of his day was a hole-out from the bunker on the 18th.

While the strong finish likely won't win McIlroy his first-ever green jacket, it all but guarantees his best ever finish at the Masters. While McIlroy is a four-time major champion, his best ever finish at Augusta National was fourth.

McIlroy started the tournament with back-to-back 73 rounds followed by a 71 in the third round. He entered the final day in a tie for ninth place, 10 strokes off the lead.
