Rory McIlroy, following a steady start at the Valero Texas Open, currently sits in fifth place at -5 under par heading into the weekend, trailing leader Akshay Bhatia who impressively leads the field at -11. In a press conference after his second round, McIlroy shared his thoughts, highlighting the challenges he has faced and his focus on consistency leading up to the Masters.

During an interview following his second round, McIlroy remarked on the tough and windy conditions as well as his performance so far at TPC San Antonio.

"Yeah, it was pretty good. I mean, I think, you know, I could stand here and say I wish I was a few shots better and missed a few putts and whatever, but it was tricky conditions," said McIlroy.

"I've only made one bogey over two days, which I'm really pleased with," he added, underscoring a newfound steadiness in his game just days after it was revealed that McIlroy met with legendary swing coach Butch Harmon.

McIlroy's second-round performance showcased some ongoing improvement in his intended focus areas.

"Hit a couple of good shots into the par 3s... it's been better, definitely better than the last few weeks," McIlroy explained, mainly speaking about his iron play, a crucial aspect of his game that he's been working to hone in on.

As for maintaining a low score through the second round of play and being in contention for the weekend, McIlroy admitted to embracing a bit more conservative approach this weekend. Such a strategy will be required for Augusta's rigorous test. One he will face next weekend.

"Good Augusta golf is boring golf... a ton of pars," McIlroy stated. While he finds himself in contention this weekend in Texas, it is obvious that his eyes are on winning a green jacket next week and capturing the so-far elusive career Grand Slam.

All eyes will likely be on McIlroy this weekend to see if he can overcome a six-stroke deficit and close the gap on Bhatia, who needs to secure a victory to play in next week's Masters tournament
