South Florida's sports dominance stretches to PGA Championship

South Florida sports are thriving, with two of the area's professional teams on the cusp of title glory. So naturally, West Palm Beach native Brooks Koepka captured the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill on Sunday.

After finishing as the runner-up in the Masters last month, Koepka shot a final-round 67 on Sunday to capture his third PGA Championship and first since 2019.

Koepka became the 20th men's golfer to win five major championships, but only the third in the last 30 years, joining greats Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, per ESPN Stats and Info.

The 33-year-old now holds the distinction of being the first LIV golfer to win a PGA major.

Sunday's victory marked an official return for Koepka, who has battled injuries and a suspension from the PGA Tour over the past two years. After being presented with the Wanamaker Trophy, an emotional Koepka said he was at a loss for words.

"I don't know the list of guys - how many guys have won five times - to be with those groups of names is absolutely incredible," Koepka said via CBS Sports, "something I'll be honest, I'm not even sure I dreamed of it as a kid that I was going to win this many."

Koepka's PGA Championship win may only be the beginning for Miami-area sports. Both the Miami Heat and the Florida Panthers are battling in their league's respective conference finals, with each only two wins away from reaching the championship round.
