Tiger Woods' 2001 backup putter sells for over $154K

Someone who really likes Tiger Woods picked up one of his backup putters via auction on Sunday morning for more money than most people make in a year.

According to ESPN's Tom VanHaaren, Woods' backup putter from 2001 sold at Golden Age Golf Auctions for $154,928, which is believed to be the most a putter of that caliber has ever sold for.

The putter is a Scotty Cameron Newport II, produced for Woods as a backup to the putter he has used to win 14 of his major championships. Scotty Cameron made the putter in case anything happened to Woods' No. 1 or he decided to make a switch.

The putter, produced in 2001, is from the same year Woods won all four majors consecutively after winning the Masters in April. Woods never used this particular putter in tournament action, though he often would test and practice with backup putters, VanHaaren adds.

Since Woods won the Masters in 2019, Golden Age Golf Auctions says there's been a significant increase in interest for his memorabilia. The auction house previously sold three of Woods backup putters in the past -- one for $88,809 in 2019, another for $44,401 in 2018 and another for $19,190 in 2014.
