Tiger Woods finishes rough first round at British Open six strokes over par

Tiger Woods found the water on the first hole to begin his day Thursday at the 2022 British Open and never managed to find a rhythm. He finished his first round six strokes over par and sits near the bottom of the tournament leaderboard.

Woods, 46, hit three birdies Thursday, but those holes were offset by five bogeys and two double bogeys. On the first hole, his tee shot landed in a fairway divot and his second shot rolled into the burn in front of the green.

Through four holes, Woods was already four over par and couldn't dig his way out of the hole. He finished his day in a tie for 146th out of the 156 players in the tournament, 14 strokes behind leader Cameron Young.

Woods was involved in a serious car accident in February 2021 and was out of action until he returned for the 2022 Masters in April. He began that tournament with an impressive one-under-par performance in the first round, but struggled to keep that pace and finished 13 over par.

At the 2022 PGA Championship in May, Woods made the cut but withdrew after a disastrous, nine-over-par performance in the third round.
