Tiger Woods' Hero World Challenge tournament canceled due to coronavirus pandemic

Tiger Woods’ TGR Foundation announced on Monday that the Hero World Challenge scheduled to be held at Albany Golf Club in the Bahamas this December has been canceled because of issues related to the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement shared by the PGA Tour website, the Foundation explained:

"Given the current global restrictions and ongoing developments resulting from COVID-19, the 2020 Hero World Challenge will not be played this year. This decision was made with the health and well-being of all tournament constituents and the Albany community in mind. We look forward to hosting 18 of the top players in the world and welcoming tournament guests to Albany, Bahamas next year. Updates on the 2021 event will be made at HeroWorldChallenge.com and @TGRLiveEvents social channels."

Earlier this month, ESPN Events announced that it had called off this year's Hawaii Bowl and Bahamas Bowl due to travel restrictions that aren't likely to be loosened in the foreseeable future.

As Bob Harig wrote for ESPN, Mark Steinberg, Woods' agent, said that discussions occurred about hosting the tournament in Florida this year, but relocating the event didn't solve issues involving Hero MotoCorp executives and guests traveling from India. The Hero was originally scheduled for Dec. 3-6.

Henrik Stenson won last year's edition of the Hero. Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, California has also hosted the Hero in the past and is the home of this week's Zozo Championship.

Also on Monday, world No. 1 Dustin Johnson withdrew from the Zozo Championship. It's the second tournament Johnson has missed since he tested positive for the coronavirus early last week.
