The PGA Tour announced a new Transaction Subcommittee on Thursday. The committee will serve directly under the PGA Tour Policy board with the sole purpose of negotiating a deal with PIF. Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Adam Scott were among the players selected to the committee.
The aforementioned players will work alongside other representatives from the PGA Tour, including commissioner Jay Monahan, former PGA player and Policy Board member Joe Ogilvie, Fenway Sports Group's John Henry, and PGA Tour Enterprises chairman Joe Gorder.
Golf Channel's Todd Lewis broke the news after the first round of the Wells Fargo Championship.
A Big Step; Rory Is Back in the Room
The news came as quite a shock intially. Reports earlier in the month indicated that Rory McIlroy was looking to regain a seat on the PGA Tour Policy Board after Webb Simpson elected to step down, only for Board members to vote 3-2 earlier this week in favor of McIlroy NOT being welcomed back.
Now just a few days later, McIlroy is back in the board room and on the front lines to bring golf reunification, representing a huge step in the right direction for the PGA Tour. This development comes almost a year after the framework agreement between the PGA Tour and PIF was announced with little to no progress toward a deal since.
On Tap At The Tee Box
It's time for the PGA Tour to go to war and hammer out this deal with PIF. The Tour and its product continue to struggle with ratings dropping weekly. Golf needs unification and this is the group that's been assembled to get it done, though I believe some of the choices for the subcommittee are still questionable.
However, golf fans have to be pleased with most of the group, especially with Woods, McIlroy, and Scott representing the players' interests. These are three of the best choices to speak for the PGA Tour and its players. I wish Jimmy Dunne, who initially drafted the framework agreement, had a direct role in this subcommittee, however. Regardless, this is a significant announcement and hopefully a big step in the right direction for the PGA Tour.
