Viktor Hovland makes PGA Tour history with FedEx Cup victory

Entering the final round of the Tour Championship Sunday with a six-shot lead, Viktor Hovland closed the deal Sunday, winning the 2023 FedEx Cup while making unique history along the way.

According to ESPN Stats and Info, Hovland is the fifth player to close out a FedEx Cup victory by winning the final two playoff events, but at 25 years old, he's the youngest.

Furthermore, Hovland set the PGA Tour single-season record for earnings, with $32.1M, per Front Office Sports

After shooting a 61 to win the BMW Championship last week, Hovland followed up that performance with another stellar outing at the Tour Championship.

Hovland ultimately outlasted his two closest competitors for the FedEx Cup, Xander Schauffele and Wyndham Clark, taking home a cool $18M bonus.

For the Norwegian, it's his sixth PGA Tour victory and third of 2023.

After his massive win, Hovland explained to golf analyst Ron Mintz how his game has improved, adding that he no longer has to try and be perfect.

"Before, it felt like, man, I have to not give up any shots to shoot a good round of golf," Hovland said. "Whereas, now that's not true anymore. I can hit one bad, and I can get up-and-down and move on and birdie the next three and then suddenly we're right there."

After arguably the two best weeks of his career, Hovland has growth and confidence on his side. What could be next for Hovland? The sky seems to be the limit.
