Why is the PGA Tour tabling global series for 'elevated' events?

More changes are coming to the PGA Tour schedule, as ESPN reported Wednesday that an originally-planned global series consisting of three international events is being tabled for the time being.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan originally announced plans for the global series back in June, although dates for the events were never set in stone. The events were set to have a limited field with no cuts and purses of at least $20 million.

Why is the PGA stepping away from the global series? According to reports on Wednesday, the focus is to be put on 13 tournaments already in the rotation, including the Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players, Memorial Tournament, WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play and the three FedEx Cup Playoffs events, just to name a few.

Of course, a lot has happened in the golf world since Monahan made the initial announcement about the global series back in June. The PGA has been working overtime to revamp its schedule for the coming seasons as it contends with golfers defecting to the rival LIV Golf league but continuing to argue to play in top-ranked PGA-backed events. Pros who are avidly siding with the PGA have even admitted the league is making these changes at a rapid rate to combat the rival upstart, which features fewer events with exorbitantly higher purses.

Golf fans should buckle up. This likely won't be the last time the PGA Tour calendar changes before the new season starts.
