The USGA on Monday announced it will return to a venerable standard, naming New York's Winged Foot Golf Club as the host course of the 2028 U.S. Open.

It will be the seventh time the private track has played host to the U.S. Open after last putting on the delayed 2020 championship won by Bryson DeChambeau.

The list of U.S. Open champions at Winged foot, other than DeChambeau, include Bobby Jones (1929), Billy Casper (1959), Hale Irwin (1974), Fuzzy Zoeller (1984) and Geoff Ogilvy (2006).

"Winged Foot has provided the backdrop for some of the most dramatic moments in the history of our sport, with many of golf's legendary champions being crowned on the club's iconic West Course," USGA chief championships officer John Bodenhamer said in a statement. "We strive to provide players with the greatest stages on which to compete for a national championship, and there are few stages as grand as Winged Foot."

The 36-hole private club will play host to the 2028 event on its West Course, which was renovated as recently as 2018. Winged Foot was also host of the 1997 PGA Championship won by Davis Love III.

When DeChambeau won the U.S. Open at Winged Foot in 2020, he was the only player in the field to shoot below par, at 6 under. The event was moved from the traditional Father's Day weekend date to September because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The host of this year's U.S. Open will be the Los Angeles Country Club North Course June 15-18. The event then moves to Pinehurst (N.C.) Resort (2024), Oakmont Country Club in Plum, Penn. (2025), Shinnecock Hills (N.Y.) Golf Club (2026) and Pebble Beach Golf Links along the coast of California (2027).
