The 153rd Open Championship is underway at Royal Portrush, with several top contenders eyeing the final men’s major title of the year. Known for its challenging layout and unpredictable conditions, the Open has already begun to separate those who can manage the mental and physical grind from those who can’t.

Among the big names in the field is Bryson DeChambeau, who came into the week in strong form after a win and two top-10 finishes in his last four LIV Golf starts.

However, DeChambeau’s campaign for a third major title didn’t get off to the start he hoped for. He opened with a disappointing 78 in round one.

Known for his long drives, DeChambeau surprisingly ranked just 15th in driving distance in the opening round, averaging 312 yards. For a player who leads LIV Golf in driving distance this season, that’s unexpected. But with Royal Portrush demanding careful decisions off the tee, many players are opting to take less club to stay in play.

Despite the rough beginning, Bryson stayed mentally composed, something he has struggled with in the past. Speaking emotionally after the round, he said, “I want to go home … but I can’t give up. My dad always told me never to give up.” He added, “I was proud of the way I fought back … to hold myself together and not get pissed and slam clubs. … I was very proud of myself.”

DeChambeau highlighted how important it was for him to be a role model. “I want to be a good role model for kids,” he said. “That’s the reason why I do it.” For DeChambeau, this Open has become more than just about scorecards. It’s become a personal test of growth, patience and control.

DeChambeau benefited from his positive attitude. He improved 13 strokes in the second round with a 65 to move to 1-over par for the tournament and is likely to make the cut.
