Scottie Scheffler’s struggles explained by his comments after the PGA Championship

Albeit by his own lofty standards, Scottie Scheffler’s 2026 has been disappointing so far.

He’s winless since January, and Scheffler’s swing is not as laser accurate or as consistent as it has been in the last two seasons. He’s been one of the best players in the world still, but while Scheffler was once untouchable at the top of the sport, there are players coming for his throne.

It’s a sudden drop-off from the heights of last year, when Scheffler was being compared to Tiger Woods because of his outright dominance. But what he said after the PGA Championship gives us a window into why he’s not been at his brilliant best in 2026.

Scottie Scheffler admits he’s not been able to play as much golf this year

Scheffler welcomed the birth of his second child, Remy, ahead of The Masters this year. He’s known already as a committed family man, and has made it clear that his family comes before golf in his list of priorities, and that could go some way to explaining his performances this year.

The world number one revealed that he’s not been able to spend as much time on the golf course this year as he helps to raise his two children.

Speaking before the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, Scheffler said, “I think so far this year, when you add a second child to the mix, I think that’s a whole different ballgame in terms of home life. Then like you said, yeah, there’s a lot more activity for me at golf tournaments than there was early in my career. I think you just adjust.

“I can’t spend as much time at the golf course as I did when I was younger, early in my career, and that’s for a variety of reasons. It’s more important for me to get home in a timely manner now. A lot of it is just schedule adjustments. You just adjust your day and prioritize the things I need to prioritize. Yeah, just doing the best I can is really all I can describe it as.

“Some days you feel better than others, but overall, I think when you’re tired at the end of the day, I think it’s a good thing. It’s good. Being tired, I think, means you had a nice full day.

“Rest is important too, and most days, especially when I’m competing out here on TOUR, I should be tired because I’ll have a full day of competing out here, and when I get home, it’s game on with two little ones. So full days.”

It’s only natural that as players get older their priorities change, and they are no longer able to commit themselves fully to the sport as they did when they were younger.

That allows the younger players to catch up with their workload, so Scheffler may be looking over his shoulder for years to come.
