One race can change a lot of things, and for the connections of Disco Ebo, that race has led to a solid payday to kick off the 2024 racing season.
The 5-year-old Weigelia mare's seasonal bow saw her hold on to win a 6 1/2-furlong allowance race at Parx Racing by a head on Jan. 24.
Disco Ebo earned $36,300 in combined Pennsylvania incentive earnings from that victory, putting her in the pole position among Keystone State program earners through the first month of the year.
Horses bred and sired in the Keystone State are eligible for a 40 percent purse bonus on earnings, and Disco Ebo picked up $18,480 for breeder St. Omer's Farm during her allowance win to lead all horses in January.
Disco Ebo was also the state's top earner of Pennsylvania stallion awards at the end of January, bringing in $4,620 for Wyn Oaks Farm, owner of Weigelia.
Registered Pennsylvania-breds by a state-resident sire earn a 10 percent bonus on purse for first-through-third efforts at tracks within the state.
Rounding out the triple play, Disco Ebo led all horses in owner awards generated by her seasonal debut, earning $13,200 for owner Cash Is King LLC and LC Racing LLC. Because the mare was both bred and sired in Pennsylvania, she was eligible for a 40 percent owner bonus on her purse earnings for races at Parx Racing.
Disco Ebo was bred in Pennsylvania by Susan Quick's St. Omer's Farm, out of the winning Disco Rico mare Katarica Disco.
Katarica Disco was herself a homebred from the Quick family's program. Second dam Legal Kat and third dam Kattebuck were each co-bred by Susan's late husband Stephen Quick, while fourth dam Kattegat's Pride was bred by the late Quick alone.
Katarica Disco is the dam of 10 winners from 11 foals to race, including six black type earners, all by Weigelia.
Disco Ebo's stakes-performing full-siblings include Grade 3-placed stakes winner Smooth B, stakes winners Fat Kat and Fore Harp, Grade 2-placed Disco Rose, and stakes-placed Pink Princess. The extended family features Grade 3-winning millionaire Silmaril, who was also bred and raced by a partnership that included Stephen Quick.
Weigelia, a 21-year-old son of Safely's Mark, stands at WynOaks Farm in Delta, Pa.
Though Susan Quick is based in Maryland, she owns the farm just on the other side of the state border. WynOaks is managed by her son Chip Wheeler and his wife Barbara.
WynOaks Farm consigned Disco Ebo as agent for Quick at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearling Sale, where she sold to LC Racing for $52,000. Cash Is King bought in on the filly prior to her on-track debut, and she was placed in the barn of trainer Robert E. Reid Jr.
Disco Ebo has won 10 of 21 career starts, and posted earnings of $598,544. Among those victories are three in stakes company: the Shamrock Rose Stakes at Penn National during her 2-year-old season, the Youngstown Oaks at Mahoning Valley Race Course at age three, and the Penn's Landing Stakes at Parx during her 4-year-old season last year.
