Anthony Volpe had your average sophomore season with the New York Yankees in 2024.
The shortstop led the Bronx Bombers with 160 games played. He was a staple on the diamond for the Yankees as they won 94 games during the regular season and made their first World Series appearance since 2009.
Volpe hit 12 home runs and drove in 60 runs while stealing 28 bases. He batted .243 with a .657 OPS and provided the team with 3.4 wins above replacement. The shortstop's production improved when it came to the playoffs, as he was 14-49 with five stolen bases and a .815 OPS in 14 games.
Volpe didn’t take the big leap that many expected him to take in his second season with the team, but his all-around game still flashed potential. His power went down, but his batting average drastically rose and he recorded fewer strikeouts in more at-bats. The shortstop was also named a Gold Glove finalist in 2024 after taking home the award in 2023.
Volpe spent time in the leadoff spot for the Yankees but eventually found a home in the bottom half of the batting order.
The shortstop’s best game via win probability added came early in the season against the Cleveland Guardians. He faced Emmanuel Clase with two outs in the bottom of the ninth of a 5-4 game. Volpe hit a double that tied the game. The Yankees eventually lost the April 13 game, but Volpe’s clutch hitting gave them a solid chance to come from behind and win.
The Yankees will continue to utilize Volpe at shortstop for years to come. The team hopes for the 23-year-old to continue to grow and become the team’s next star shortstop.
