The 2023 Los Angeles Dodgers coaching staff under manager Dave Roberts does not include any new additions, but Danny Lehmann was promoted from game planning and communications coach to bench coach.

That coincides with Bob Geren shifting to Major League Field Coordinator, a newly-created position within the Dodgers organization. Geren had been Roberts’ bench coach since the 2016 season.

Lehmann’s promotion comes after spending the past three seasons as the Dodgers’ game planning and communications coach. He also held that position in 2018, but spent 2019 as a special assistant to the club.

Another minor change within the Dodgers coaching staff for 2023 is Aaron Bates formally joining Robert Van Scoyoc as a hitting coach. That was mentioned by president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman to be the expected decision when the Miami Marlins hired Brant Brown for their hitting coach position.

Bates spent the past four seasons as an assistant hitting coach for the Dodgers and overall is entering his ninth year with the organization.

The don’t appear to be filling the co-hitting coach position vacated by Bates, nor did they name a new game planning and communications coach to take those duties from Lehmann.

Roberts nearly saw another departure from his staff as Clayton McCullough was a finalist to become the new Kansas City Royals manager, which wound up going to Matt Quatraro.
