The Chicago White Sox still appear likely to trade starting pitcher Dylan Cease, and a new team is being linked to a possible move for him.

The New York Yankees have “sincere interest” in trading for Cease, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. A number of other teams are also interested, including the Baltimore Orioles.

Trading for Cease could present some challenges for the Yankees. By acquiring Juan Soto earlier in the offseason, they gave up significant prospect depth and might have to dig deep to get Cease. However, the Yankees urgently want to add a top starting pitcher after missing out on Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Cease is one of the few attainable options that would fit the bill.

Cease is coming off an underwhelming 2023 season with the White Sox, which saw him post a 4.58 ERA in 33 starts. He had a 2.20 ERA in 2022 and was the runner-up for that year’s AL Cy Young award. The Yankees may want him but may have to find a way to outbid teams with deeper farm systems to get him.
