Fresh off a sweep of the New York Mets, the Chicago Cubs opened a series with the Colorado Rockies on Friday. Ahead of the series opener, the team provided a number of injury updates. Among those, RHP Alec Mills underwent surgery, OF Seiya Suzuki's x-rays came back negative, and C Willson Contreras advanced in his running progression.

Alec Mills only appeared in seven games this season for the Cubs, making two starts. The right-hander finished the season with a 9.68 ERA, but it's clear his numbers were impacted by his health. After undergoing a successful low-back discectomy, Mills will ideally return in 2023 and have an impact on the Cubs' roster.

In addition, Seiya Suzuki received positive news regarding his hand. After being struck by a pitch, Suzuki's x-ray results came back negative. Although the injury has kept the outfielder out of the lineup, knowing there is no significant damage is comforting.

Suzuki has been incredibly hot of late for the Cubs. After struggling for portions of the season, the 28-year-old has turned it around. Over his last 30 games, Suzuki is slashing .306/.374/.468 with four home runs and 11 RBI. He has also added 14 runs scored, 10 walks, and three stolen bags. In addition, the slugging has really come around with two of his four homers coming in the last seven games.

Finally, it appears Willson Contreras is improving in his rehab. Contreras' power stroke would be welcomed back to the lineup. Although his average has dipped to .246, his OPS continues to thrive to the tune of .822. There is no timetable yet for a return, but Contreras has been on the 10-day IL since September 6 retroactive to September 3. However, an MRI confirmed there is hope for a return before the end of the season.
