The Braves pitchers and catchers reported on time to Spring Training yesterday, with a few position players joining them a week early. Everyone is excited for the challenge ahead, as the Braves aim to climb to the top of the mountain for the first time since 2021 after back-to-back dismal postseason performances.

On Thursday, Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos met with the media for the first time at Spring Training, discussing a slew of topics, one being especially interesting in regards to potential injuries as the season begins. Anthopoulos said they would not discuss minor injuries, but he did say there are no surprises as Spring Training gets underway.

Injuries have ravaged the Braves over the last few years, particularly when it comes to the pitching staff. There are several guys set to return from major injuries this Spring Training, so it’s important to see how they are handled over the next six weeks.

Tyler Matzek and Huascar Ynoa are both coming back from Tommy John surgery. Dylan Lee missed most of last year with a shoulder injury, which is the kind of thing that can linger for years into the future. All of them will be competing for roster spots, and none of them should be viewed as locks with the kind of depth the Braves have on the roster.

Then there are starting pitchers like Chris Sale and Max Fried to keep an eye on. The Braves newest acquisition has been dealing with nothing but injuries over the last several years, but Sale did say after he was traded that this was the first time he has been healthy in the offseason for a while.

Last season, Fried dealt with elbow discomfort. He did return at the end of the year, and it didn’t look as if he was dealing with the lingering effects of the injury. But it goes without saying, elbow injuries are no joke, and Fried is still the ace of the Braves staff. His health is worth monitoring throughout Spring Training.
