The Carlos Correa saga was the top storyline of the offseason. In a loaded shortstop free agent class, he was the cream of the crop, but he ended up signing the third-most lucrative deal after multiple mega-contracts fell through following failed physicals.
Originally, Correa signed a 13-year, $350 million contract with the Giants, but that was nixed after his first failed physical. Not long after that, he inked another massive 12-year, $315 million deal with the Mets — terrible news for Braves fans. Thankfully, that deal fell through as well, and Correa chose to return to the Twins, inking a six-year, $200 million contract to stay in Minnesota. That was music to the ears of Braves Country, and nobody was monitoring the situation more closely than Alex Anthopoulos, who recently said he was “pumped” after finding out Correa would not be signing with the Mets.
I’m not sure the Braves could be in better hands. Alex Anthopoulos is one of the best general managers in all of sports, and I’m a huge fan of how he approaches things publicly.
Unlike the Mets, the Braves keep information close to the vest. Nothing is ever leaked before it is official, which prevents them from getting caught with their pants down. Alex Anthopoulos never comments on any ongoing negotiations, but he also somehow finds a way to be extremely transparent and relatable to fans.
This clip is fantastic and paints the picture that Anthopoulos is just like us. Nobody wanted to see Correa end up with the Mets, and the fact that the deal fell threw is one of the brighter parts of the Braves entire offseason, which was rather quiet for the most part.
