All-Star catcher Russell Martin officially retires from baseball

Four-time All-Star catcher Russell Martin officially retired from Major League Baseball on Saturday. 

Martin, who hasn't played in MLB since 2019, announced his retirement via an Instagram post. 

"As you may know, I stepped away from Baseball after my 2019 season with the Dodgers," Martin wrote. "After 14 years in MLB, I am officially retiring from professional baseball."

Martin played his final MLB season with the team that drafted him in 2002, the Los Angeles Dodgers. In what would be his last season, Martin played 83 games, batting .220/.337/.330 with six home runs and 20 RBIs. 

Over his 14-year playing career, Martin played for the Dodgers, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates and Toronto Blue Jays. 

Along with four All-Star nods (2007, 2008, 2011, 2015), Martin won a Gold Glove and the Silver Slugger Award in 2007. 

In 1,693 career MLB games, Martin batted .248/.349/.397, with 191 home runs and 771 RBIs. 

Martin played in 58 career postseason games, batting .191 with six home runs and 22 RBIs.
