Angels' Anthony Rendon having season-ending hip surgery

The Los Angeles Angels have been without superstar Mike Trout since May 17 because of a calf strain and confirmed on Wednesday a different familiar face won't be back this year.

According to Dave Sessions of the league's website, Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon requires season-ending surgery to repair a right hip impingement. Rendon hasn't played in a month and went on the injured list on July 6 with a left hamstring strain and then developed the hip issue during his recovery.

The 31-year-old previously missed time this season with a groin strain and a left knee contusion. He ends the campaign batting .240 with six home runs and 34 RBI.

Los Angeles, meanwhile, began Wednesday evening at 53-54 and 12 games back of the first-place Houston Astros in the American League West standings.

Per The Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Angels manager Joe Maddon told reporters Tuesday he remains hopeful Trout will eventually return this season even though the star's timeline "keeps getting pushed back."

Maddon added about the three-time AL Most Valuable Player: "We all thought that he'd be playing right around now at the worst, and it's not happening. We'll keep playing it all the way through."
