On Monday night, the Los Angeles Angels made a key move to help with pitching depth, signing veteran right-hander Chris Devenski to a one-year contract.

Injuries limited the 32-year-old to just 13 appearances between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Philadelphia Phillies.

In those 13 games, the veteran reliever went 2-1 and posted an 8.59 ERA.

Devenski, a Los Angeles area native, has spent the vast majority of his career with the Houston Astros and was a key piece in their run to the World Series in 2017, posting a 2.68 ERA over 62 appearances.

Over seven seasons in the Major Leagues, the right-hander owns a 3.70 ERA.

The veteran will have a chance to compete for a spot on the Halos Opening Day roster in 2023.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reported the news.

Halos Add Veteran Arm

Devenski has not pitched a full season since 2019.

The 32-year-old right-hander was limited to just four appearances in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, posting a 14.73 ERA.

He also appeared in just eight games in 2021.

But the Angels struggles this season were largely due to pitching.

The starting rotation and the bullpen lacked depth.

Adding Devenski on a one-year deal gives them a little extra depth and also gives him an opportunity to prove himself and compete for a spot on the Angels roster.

It could turn out to be a low-risk, high-reward type deal if all goes according to plan.

But adding an extra arm to strengthen their pitching staff gives them some much-needed depth entering the 2023 season, which is something they lacked in 2022.
