Angels' Noah Syndergaard scratched from start vs. White Sox with non-COVID illness

The Los Angeles Angels announced somewhat of a concerning change shortly before Friday night's game at the Chicago White Sox held at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Per The Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Angels right-handed pitcher Noah Syndergaard was scratched from his scheduled start against the White Sox with an undisclosed illness. The Angels instead put righty Jimmy Herget on the bump.

Manager Joe Maddon didn't get into specifics on what is ailing Syndergaard other than to say that the 29-year-old one-time All-Star "wasn't feeling well" before the game. Rhett Bollinger of the official MLB website added that Syndergaard's illness is not related to COVID-19 but also explained that Mike Trout, Anthony Rendon, and Brandon Marsh previously missed time this month due to whatever is apparently spreading through the Angels' squad.

Syndergaard joined the Angels via a one-year contract worth $21 million this past November and has made three starts for his current employer. He's 2-0 with a 2.12 ERA on the young campaign.

The Angels, meanwhile, entered Friday night in first place in the American League West standings at 13-7 and holding a five-game winning streak coming off a four-game sweep of the Cleveland Guardians.
