While the Angels wait to learn if they can build a major league roster around two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani, they aren't wasting time shoring up their minor league depth.

According to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register, the Angels signed outfielder Willie Calhoun and right-handed pitcher Trevor MacGregor to minor league contracts with invitations to spring training.

Calhoun, a 29-year-old outfielder/designated hitter, has spent time in the Texas Rangers, San Francisco Giants, and New York Yankees organizations over the last two seasons. He's a career .240 hitter with a .701 OPS in 301 major league games.

In 2023, he appeared in only 44 games, all with the Yankees, slashing .239/.309/.403 in 134 at-bats.

A Bay Area native, Calhoun was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2015, and will return to his home state after a four-game stint with the Giants in 2022.

MacGregor figures to slot into the Angels' depth chart at AAA, where he's spent parts of the last two seasons in the Pittsburgh Pirates' organization. He has a career 19-24 record with a 4.92 ERA, 406 strikeouts, and a 1.46 WHIP in 141 minor league games.

A second-round pick out of high school in 2016, MacGregor has spent his entire career in the Pirates' system.

Calhoun's path forward as a fourth-round draft pick was perhaps not as smooth as projected either. Hopefully both players can be revitalized in the Angels' system.
