The New York Yankees have placed Anthony Rizzo on the 60-Day IL. Due to post-concussion syndrome, the Yankees had already shut down Rizzo for the rest of the year.

Rizzo Placed on 60-Day IL.

The Yankees first baseman has been placed on the 60-Day IL after already being on the 15-Day IL. Rizzo hasn’t played in a game since August 1. He is thought to have gotten a concussion in a game on May 28, where he collided with San Diego Padres right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr.

Rizzo was hitting .244 this season, with 12 home runs and 41 RBI. He has played in 99 games this season. He has struggled all season until May, when he is thought to have suffered a concussion. Rizzo is in his first year of a two-year, $40 million contract.

Rizzo complained of fogginess after his collision with Tatis Jr. He missed three games after the crash and continued playing. It does not bode well for the organization or Rizzo’s future if he played weeks with a possible concussion. They initially called it a “neck injury.” DJ LeMahieu and Jake Bauers have filled in for first base duties while Rizzo is out the rest of the season.

Playoff Race

The New York Yankees are not eliminated from the playoffs, but their chances are growing slimmer. Their only hope is a wild card spot, where they sit now seven games back of the last spot. They only have 17 games remaining in the year, making their odds of reaching the previous mark improbable.

Up Next

The Yankees still have two games left in a series facing the Boston Red Sox. After that, they head to Pittsburgh, play the Pirates, and have a three-game series. They must have a flawless series if they want any chances of sneaking into the last wild card spot.
