Oakland Athletics shortstop Darell Hernaiz had to exit Tuesday’s game with an ugly-looking leg injury.

In the second inning against the Texas Rangers, Hernaiz hit a chopper to the left side of the infield. The throw came in high from Texas shortstop Corey Seager, pulling first baseman Nathaniel Lowe off the bag. While Hernaiz was safe on the play and succesfully got the runner home from third base, he was injured as he hit the base.

Video replay showed that Hernaiz stretched out his leg to beat the throw and seemingly hyperextended his knee as he hit the bag. Here is the clip (where you can see Hernaiz’s left knee turn inward a bit).

Hernaiz had to exit the game, but did eventually walk off the field under his own power. He was replaced by pinch-runner Max Schuemann.

The 22-year-old Hernaiz is a rookie who made his MLB debut with Oakland earlier in the season. Through his first 28 games, Hernaiz was batting .185 with a .431 OPS.
