Astros throw combined no-hitter against Yankees

The Houston Astros, led by a dominant performance from starter Cristian Javier, threw a combined no-hitter in a 3-0 win against the New York Yankees on Saturday.

Javier, 25, got the start and threw seven hitless innings with 13 strikeouts and one walk issued. With his pitch count at a career-high 115 pitches, Javier was relieved by Héctor Neris in the eighth inning. After Neris kept the no-hitter in tact, Ryan Pressly earned the save in the ninth inning with two strikeouts followed by a game-sealing groundout.

Javier had only thrown more than 100 pitches in one previous start in his MLB career and improved to 5-3 on the year with the victory. His ERA dropped to 2.73 with the stellar showing against one of MLB's most potent offenses.

The Yankees entered Saturday as one of only two teams -- along with the Los Angeles Dodgers -- averaging more than five runs per game. New York also leads MLB in home runs with 118. Josh Donaldson was the only player to reach base against Javier via a walk in the first inning and an error in the seventh.

The no-hitter is the third of the MLB season and the first for the Astros since the team recorded two during the 2019 season. It's the second time in the last 64 years that the Yankees have been no-hit. The only other instance was another combined no-hitter for the Astros in June 2003.

In April, the New York Mets threw a combined no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies and the Los Angeles Angels' Reid Detmers recorded one against the Tampa Bay Rays in May.
