Beau Burrows elected free agency after clearing waivers and being removed from the Los Angeles Dodgers 40-man roster that led to then getting sent outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Due to previously being outrighted in his career, the 26-year-old had the option to refuse his latest Minor League assignment. The Dodgers added Burrows and Jacob Amaya to their 40-man roster earlier this month, though the right-hander was immediately assigned to OKC and shortstop was placed on the 60-day injured list.

Burrows spent the entire 2022 season with Oklahoma City, where he pitched to a 7.18 ERA and 1.82 WHIP across 100.1 innings. Burrows has a career 4.33 ERA in the Minors, and has only appeared in 11 games at the Major League level since being selected by the Detroit Tigers with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2015 Draft.

Burrows made his MLB debut with the Tigers in 2020 and pitched to a 5.40 ERA across five appearances. He then allowed four runs over 1.2 innings in one appearance for Detroit last year.

After getting claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Twins in June 2021, Burrows posted a 12.54 ERA across 9.1 innings and five games (one start). He joined the Dodgers organization last November by signing a Minor League contract.

Why did Dodgers add Beau Burrows to 40-man roster?

October 5 was the last day teams could put a player on the 60-day IL, but they are required to have a full 40-man roster in order to do so. With Amaya landing on the 60-day IL, he no longer occupied a spot on the Dodgers 40-man as it went to Burrows.

It gave the Dodgers more roster flexibility heading into the postseason in the event they wished to activate anyone on the 60-day IL, such as Kevin Pillar or Victor González. A corresponding roster move could have been to designate Burrows for assignment.
