Blue Jays acquire much-needed bullpen help

One day after placing closer Jordan Romano on the injured list with a back injury , the Toronto Blue Jays acquired St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Jordan Hicks.

After a rough start to his 2023 season, Hicks has been one of the best relievers in the National League. Since May 3, he has posted a 2.67 ERA with eight saves and 39 strikeouts over 30 1/3 innings pitched. He also has not allowed a home run during that span.

One of the more electric arms in baseball, Hicks will give Blue Jays manager John Schneider an arm that he can leave out for more than one inning if needed.

A free agent after the season, Hicks will look to continue his strong play to improve his chances at a substantial payday this upcoming winter.

Five games behind the Baltimore Orioles for first place in the American League East, the Blue Jays are holding on to a Wild Card spot, but there is not much room for error with teams trailing right behind them.

In return for Hicks, the Blue Jays traded away two Double-A pitchers, including Sem Robberse, the organization's No. 7-ranked prospect.

The Cardinals will continue to look to sell before the trade deadline, with their 2023 season already a lost one and the team currently holding a 47-60 record. St. Louis will try to have a strong offseason and bounce back in 2024.

With plenty of options in the minor leagues to shop for upgrades, the Blue Jays should still be in the market for a few more pieces as they push for the playoffs.
