Blue Jays' George Springer on IL with left knee sprain

Toronto Blue Jays three-time All-Star outfielder George Springer just cannot stay healthy this season.

Ahead of Tuesday's game at the Washington Nationals, Toronto confirmed that Springer is going on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Sunday with a left knee sprain. Per an ESPN piece, Springer suffered what was first reported to be a mild left ankle sprain during Saturday's loss to the Seattle Mariners and hasn't played since. The 31-year-old is batting .269 with 16 home runs and 35 RBI on the campaign.

In a corresponding roster move, Toronto recalled infielder Otto Lopez from Triple-A Buffalo.

Springer signed a six-year, $150 million deal to join the Blue Jays in January but has dealt with multiple frustrating setbacks since the spring. He's missed time with a strained left oblique muscle, a right quadriceps strain and now a knee issue.

The Blue Jays, meanwhile, begin Tuesday evening at 63-54, eight games back of the first-place Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East standings.
