Blue Jays pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu done for the year due to elbow injury

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu will miss the remainder of the season due to an elbow injury that will require surgery, the team announced Tuesday.

Ryu, 35, will undergo a procedure that will determine if he needs a full Tommy John surgery or a more minor repair of his UCL, according to the team.

"He's extremely disappointed," Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said. "He just got to the point where he just wanted to compete as quick as humanly possible. We felt like this was the best thing to do that. We're focused on him doing that for us."

Ryu was a seven-time All-Star in the Korea Baseball Organization before signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2012. He posted a 54-33 record in six seasons with the Dodgers and earned an All-Star nod in his final season with the team. Ryu joined the Blue Jays ahead of the 2020 season on a four-year, $80 million deal.

In his first season with Toronto, Ryu finished third in Cy Young voting, but he finished his second season with a 14-10 record and 4.37 ERA. This season, Ryu appeared in six games and posted a 2-0 record with a 5.67 ERA.
