The Toronto Blue Jays have provided an injury update regarding their top prospect, Gabriel Moreno, although baseball fans may need to sit down before reading it.

Moreno, who hasn’t played since Aug. 5, has been dealing with soreness in his right thumb lately. The 22-year-old is currently on a hitting progression, but there’s no timetable for his return.

What’s more concerning is that this is the same thumb Moreno fractured last season, forcing him to miss over two months before he returned in September.

If this ailment is still bothering him, it could explain Moreno’s power outage in 2022, where he’s posted just two home runs and a .391 slugging percentage in 49 games with triple-A Buffalo. He’s also mustered a measly .092 isolated power.

On the season, the right-handed catcher is hitting .299/.369/.391 with 29 RBIs and a 108 wRC+ score across 206 plate appearances. Earlier this season, he briefly appeared in the majors, slashing .276/.300/.293 in 18 contests.

Moreno is currently the No. 5 top prospect in all of baseball, according to MLB Pipeline.
