Blue Jays sign two-time All-Star to one-year deal
The Toronto Blue Jays have added some much needed depth to the corners of their infield.
Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that the Blue Jays have signed Justin Turner to a one-year deal. While he will be their primary designated hitter, Morosi further reported that Turner will see time at first and third as well.
The 39-year-old Turner put together a strong season for the Red Sox in 2023. He posted a .276/.345/.455 batting line in his 626 plate appearances, hitting 23 homers and 31 doubles. Turner also expanded his defensive versatility last year, more than doubling his career appearances and innings at first base.
His ability to play either corner infield spot is a draw for the Blue Jays. Third base is still unsettled as Matt Chapman departed for free agency. Davis Schneider, Cavan Biggio and the recently signed Isiah Kiner-Falefa are the current options at the hot corner. Turner, while envisioned to be the primary DH, will factor into that mix. Likewise, his time at first will help Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The Blue Jays will be able to give him a partial day off as their DH without having to worry about a drastic impact on the lineup.
Turner does have a drawback when it comes to the lineup. The Blue Jays have a heavily right-handed lineup, with Biggio, Kevin Kiermaier and Daulton Varsho the only lefties. Turner is another right-handed hitter. Although his splits against right-handed pitching were fine, he does not help to balance the lineup. However, given his production and the Blue Jays' needs, that drawback can be overlooked.
As long as Turner can hold Father Time off for another year, he will be a key piece as the Blue Jays look to return to the postseason.
