The Boston Red Sox have won two of three games in this series against the Minnesota Twins but the positive momentum took a hit on Wednesday night when catcher Reese McGuire left the game early with an oblique injury.

McGuire, acquired in 2022 around the trade deadline, doesn't play as much as Connor Wong but he is a valued member of the team and he's now likely to miss multiple weeks.

The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

McGuire was removed from Wednesday's game against the Twins due to a right oblique strain, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

ANALYSIS
Still no word on the severity of McGuire's injury, but manager Alex Cora said a stint on the injured list is likely, per Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican. With McGuire presumably set to miss multiple weeks, the Red Sox could select Caleb Hamilton from Triple-A Worcester to temporarily serve as Connor Wong's backup.

That's a tough loss for a Red Sox team that is 2.0 games back in the American League Wild Card picture.

McGuire is hitting .267 this year with 11 RBIs in 105 at-bats. Lifetime he's a .258 hitter with 12 homers and 59 RBIs. He's played for Boston, the White Sox and the Blue Jays.

As for Hamilton, Abraham has more on his statline on Twitter:

(2/2) * They'll need a catcher and don't have any on the 40-man. @ChrisCotillo has them calling up former Twin Caleb Hamilton, who was a waiver claim in October. Hamilton has hit .174/.281/.306 in AAA and is 1x18 with 14 Ks in the majors. But the one hit was a HR.

The Red Sox play the Twins on Thursday at 1:10 p.m. ET.
