With a 2-0 series deficit looming large and a red-hot Phillies offense on the other side, Diamondbacks rookie Brandon Pfaadt defied all odds with the greatest start of his young career.
Through 5.2 innings, Pfaadt allowed just two hits while also striking out nine batters, which was a personal record.
Not only did this start help propel the Diamondbacks into the win column, but it also gave him a place in the postseason history books.
According to ESPN Stats & Info, Pfaadt became the first pitcher in history to allow zero earned runs and walk zero batters in back-to-back postseason starts.
Who would have thought, out of all the arms in the Diamondbacks pitching staff, that it would be Brandon Pfaadt, at just 25 years old, to do something nobody has achieved before?
During the regular season, Pfaadt posted a 5.72 ERA. It took him until August 25th to pick up his first career MLB win, as he started the year with a 0-6 record.
But the postseason has been a completely different story.
The Diamondbacks have won all three games that Pfaadt started in October.
This includes his 4.1-inning shutout performance against the Dodgers in the NLDS and, of course, his 5.2-inning shutout performance against the Phillies in the NLCS.
Without Pfaadt in the rotation, it is hard to imagine the Diamondbacks would be remotely close to the position that they are in today.
