Ahead of their series against the Phillies, the Braves announced they have designated Tyler Thornburg for assignment and recalled left-handed pitcher Dylan Lee.

Thornburg’s numbers weren’t bad in Atlanta. He’s posted a 3.86 ERA in 9.1 innings, and his 2.56 FIP suggests he’s even been a tad unlucky so far this season — meaning this decision is likely all about Dylan Lee, who has thrived so far with the Stripers.

In 15.2 innings, the lefty has a 2.30 ERA with 23 strikeouts and a couple of saves. Lee also served in a critical role for the Braves during last year’s postseason. For that reason, I was a bit surprised he was left off the Opening Day roster initially, but the Braves must have wanted to see what they had in Thornburg first. Clearly, they feel Lee is the better option the rest of the way, which is the reason for this decision. We will see if another team takes a chance on Thornburg, or if the Braves are able to retain him in Gwinnett.
