After Braden Shewmake was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday, many in Braves Country expected the club to call Ehire Adrianza back up to Atlanta. Sadly, the utility infielder has suffered a serious injury. But in the wake of the unfortunate news brings some fond memories because fan favorite Charlie Culberson is back with the Braves for the first time since 2020.

The 34-year-old spent 2018-2020 in Atlanta, which were the most productive seasons of his career. He is famous for being a super utility player, appearing in games at every position other than catcher and center field. Yes, including as a pitcher in blowouts.

During those three seasons, Culberson logged a .265/.314/.454 slash line in 473 plate appearances, including a career-best year in 2018. The Georgia native isn’t likely to even appear in a game unless another injury arises, but as we’ve seen, the club cannot get any luck in that department.

Everyone loves Charlie Culberson, and this move brings up some great memories, but don’t expect him to contribute in a major way for the Braves. He’s struggled mightily with the Stripers this season, slashing just .204/.234/.255 in 107 trips to the plate, though his track record in Atlanta might suggest otherwise.

Recently, he’s spent most of his time with the Rangers since the 2020 season, posting a .244/.289/.371 line across 402 trips to the plate. He’s assuming an emergency reserve role, so there’s no reason to get worked up about potentially seeing Culberson in the field.

Nevertheless, it’s great to see this old friend back in Atlanta. Hopefully, we get one last magical moment from the man, the myth, the legend — Charlie Clutch.
