As the Braves try to make a run for their sixth straight NL East title and possibly home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, we will be highlighting some of the best Braves players of all time. Today, we're taking a look at one of the greatest third basemen of all time, Larry Wayne Jones Jr. aka Chipper Jones.
Chipper played for the Braves for 19 years, making his first appearance in 1993 and his final appearance in 2012. For many of those years, he was the face of the organization. To this day, he is still known as the 'Met killer." Chipper played in eight All-Star games and was voted as league MVP in 1999. He was part of one World Series team (1995).
In 2018, Chipper was voted into the Hall of Fame by the BBWAA. His best season in Atlanta was in 2008. Chipper had a career-high and league-leading .364 batting average and .470 on-base percentage. Surprisingly enough, during his best year as a Brave, Atlanta failed to make the playoffs and finished fourth in the NL East.
Over the span of his career, Chipper finished with a .303 batting average, 468 homers, 1,623 RBI, .401 OBP, .529 SLUG, and a .930 OPS. Anytime anyone in Braves Country brings up the number ten or you see the number ten at the ballpark, Chipper is always the name that comes up. It's been ten years since he has played yet fans still wear his jersey in droves at Truist Park.
Chipper is one of the best players to ever play baseball, not just for the Braves, but for the entire MLB.
