The Braves announced today that they have signed left-handed pitcher Angel Perdomo to a one-year, non-guaranteed split contract for the 2024 season.
This is an intriguing decision. About a month ago, the Braves claimed Angel Perdomo off of waivers only to non-tender him soon after. Now, they are handing him a non-guaranteed contract for 2024, but this is all about the future.
In October, Angel Perdomo underwent Tommy John surgery. He will miss the entire 2024 season, but he does have five years of team control left and could be a piece of the Braves in 2025.
The 29-year-old has some pretty filthy stuff and posted a 3.72 ERA in 30 appearances for the Pirates this year. However, his underlying metrics suggest he could be an elite weapon out of the bullpen down the road. Perdomo’s expected ERA last season was 2.75 to go along with an expected batting average against of .183 and a strikeout rate of 37.6%. This is a name to file for a later date. He could pitch some big innings for the Braves in 2025 and beyond.
As for White, who was acquired from the Mariners in the trade that landed the Braves Jarred Kelenic, he’s now off the 40-man roster. He’s owed $15 million over the next two seasons, and it seems like he’ll be collecting those checks while playing in Gwinnett. I’m sure the Braves would love for someone to take that salary off their hands, but to do that, they would have to include some other players/prospects. That’s not something I see them eager to do with the state of their current team and farm system.
