Brett Baty: Latest Mets promotion will be 'a lot different'

New York Mets third baseman Brett Baty sounds ready to make his latest MLB promotion a long-term stay.

"Yeah, I think this time it's going to be a lot different just because I know exactly what to expect now," Baty explained, according to Ryan Chichester of Audacy. "I got a little taste last year. Everything, everything about the day and everything like that I'm comfortable with now. The guys, I've been around them for a couple years now. So there's just a little bit more comfort to it and I feel good right now."

Baty slashed .400/.500/.886 with five home runs and 15 RBI for Triple-A Syracuse this spring before he was called up to the big-league Mets ahead of Monday's game at the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 23-year-old went 1-for-4 with an RBI single in what became an exciting 8-6 New York victory.

That, of course, wasn't Baty's first appearance at the highest level. He famously went deep in his first MLB at-bat last August and ultimately hit .184 with two home runs and five RBI across 11 games in 2022.

"I try to be as present as possible wherever I am and just take it pitch to pitch and day by day," Baty said regarding the constant chatter about a possible promotion that had hovered over his status since March. "I was playing well but now it's a new test to tackle. So I'm just going to come up here and try to continue and put together good ABs and play good defense for the team."

Per ESPN, manager Buck Showalter hasn't yet committed to starting Baty as the club's first-choice option at the hot corner over Eduardo Escobar.

"Brett has a good demeanor to him," Showalter remarked. "Our young guys bring a healthy respect, but not intimidated by it. I think they're enjoying themselves."

The 11-6 Mets once again play at the 8-9 Dodgers on Tuesday evening.
