The Milwaukee Brewers have not had great luck this season with the backup catcher position. First, Manny Pina signed with the Atlanta Braves during the offseason. Milwaukee replaced him with Pedro Severino, who spent the first seven years of his career with the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles. Severino got off to a hot start this spring, but was suspended for 80 games for failing a drug test. He had been taking a medication to help him and his wife start a family, but it contained a substance banned by MLB. To replace him, Victor Caratini was acquired via trade from the San Diego Padres. So far this season, Caratini is hitting .238/.360/.429 with a home run and RBI. Unfortunately, he tested positive for COVID-19 and was placed on IL.

How Long Will Victor Caratini Be Out?

Under the new guidelines from MLB, there is no maximum stay on IL for players who test positive for COVID-19. According to Adam McCalvy, a player must have no symptoms and have two negative tests more than 24 hours apart from each other. Reports stated that Caratini was not showing signs of any COVID-19 symptoms. He could be back sooner rather than later.

To replace Caratini on the roster, the Milwaukee Brewers recalled catcher Alex Jackson from Triple-A Nashville. Jackson was acquired by the Brewers in April in a trade with the Miami Marlins. In his Major League career, split between Miami and the Atlanta Braves, Jackson is a .132/.243/.255 hitter. In Nashville this season, he was hitting .229/.300/.429 with two home runs and 10 RBI.
