Brewers' Christian Yelich returns to IL with back strain

Milwaukee Brewers two-time All-Star and one-time National League Most Valuable Player Christian Yelich just can't get right this spring.

Yelich recently missed three weeks of action due to back issues but returned for Monday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. While the 29-year-old recorded a pair of hits in that matchup, Adam McCalvy of the league's website notes that Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell told reporters on Tuesday that Yelich is again on the injured list with a back strain that hasn't significantly improved since April 11.

"Last night told us that he's not going to be able to do this on a daily basis," Counsell explained. "And so we need to stop and completely resolve this. ... At this point, we don't have an answer."

In a corresponding roster move, Milwaukee recalled outfielder Tyrone Taylor from Triple-A Nashville.

Yelich has appeared in just 10 games in the early stages of the 2021 campaign and is batting .353 with zero home runs and a single RBI. The Brewers, meanwhile, began Tuesday evening tied for the division lead with the St. Louis Cardinals at 17-12.
