Brewers first baseman injured in bizarre batting practice incident, to miss weeks

The Milwaukee Brewers were hoping to get first basemen/designated hitter Rowdy Tellez back in the lineup after a brief stay on the injured list, but that return is going to have to wait for at least a month.

Tellez had to undergo surgery this weekend on his left ring finger after getting it caught in the wall padding in Cincinnati on Saturday while shagging fly balls during batting practice.

His fingernail was torn off, resulting in 17 stitches and a small fracture to the tip of his finger.

His expected timeline for return now is sometime over the next three or four weeks.

He will not be able to resume baseball activities for at least two or three weeks.

This is not the first time the Brewers have experienced a weird injury in Cincinnati. Earlier this season infielder Darin Ruf cut his knee when he collided with the tarp roller while going after a foul ball.

Those two injuries prompted Brewers manager Craig Counsell to say the team's trainers are not exactly happy with what has been going on with the stadium in Cincinnati this season. Counsell said he saw the incident involving Tellez and that it looked very innocent.

The Brewers entered play on Sunday with a one-game lead over the Reds in the National League Central Division.
